Cutting a tree on someone else’s property is a serious issue. In Washington state the awards can lead to treble (3x) damages for replacement value of the tree or the value of the wood, whichever is greater. Replacement value of the tree is usually measured by how much it would cost to restore an equivalent-sized tree to the same location including labor and the purchase of the tree. Judgments can be in the millions and for individual land owners Pat has handled cases that awarded over $250,000. For this same case the insurance company offered $1500 plus seedlings before trial, indicating how important it can be to take these cases to court if the insurance companies do not acknowledge the true value of the trees.
God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools.
